Captain Blubber is a sea hippo and one of the main supporting characters in the Banjo-Kazooie series.

Games

Banjo Kazooie

In Banjo-Kazooie, Captain Blubber can be found in Treasure Trove Cove. He claims to have lost his treasure when his ship crashed. One part is located on the front half of the ship's inside, accessible by breaking the wood planks blocking the entrance to the ship's deck. The other part is on the back half, entered through one of the windows that can be opened with the Beak Buster. When both pieces of treasure of given back to Blubber, he will reward the duo with a Jiggy. He can also be seen at the ending of the game, riding a "Ski-1000" waveracer in the sea.

Banjo-Tooie

In Banjo-Tooie, Captain Blubber appears owning a waveracer hire in Jolly Roger's Lagoon. When the duo enters his shop and talks to him, he tells them that business hadn't been going well due to the fact that all of his waveracers shipwrecked and the last one was eaten by a fish the day before. Banjo offers to lend him "a doubloon or two", but he refuses and offers them to buy his "last possession" for one doubloon. If the duo decides to accept it, Blubber will put a crate with a pair of Turbo Trainers in the middle of the shop and leave it, claiming he will go to Jolly's for their quiz night, where 1000 doubloons will be "up fer grabs", and if he wins, he will be having himself a "fine new flying machine". At the end of the game, Captain Blubber can be seen riding the Saucer of Peril, revealing that he did win the quiz night.

Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge

In Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, Captain Blubber appears as a younger version of himself called Little Blubber, who can be found in Breegull Beach. He and his Pirate Scouts challenge Banjo and Kazooie to a game, where he holds a treasure chest with his ship. To win, Banjo must hold the chest for longer than Blubber and his crew. After being defeated in the game, Little Blubber gives the two a Jiggy.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts

In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Captain Blubber appears in every world except LOGBOX 720 and Spiral Mountain. In Showdown Town, he stands in the Uptown area selling a Trapdoor Tower combination to the duo. It is also mentioned that he crashed the Saucer of Peril in the city.

In Banjoland, Captain Blubber takes the role of "The Deluded Ex-Mariner". He hosts challenges in Act 1 and 6 (although he does appear in other challenges hosted by other characters). In the first one, he asks for Banjo and Kazooie to protect Clanker's eyes from Gruntbots. Later, he warns the duo about Mr. Patch and requests that they defeat him again.

In Jiggoseum, Blubber acts as "The Water-Sports Enthusiast", hosting challenges in Acts 3 and 6. In the first one, he asks Banjo to show his strength by lifting bowling balls. Later, he asks the duo to light the Jiggosseum torch.

In Terrarium of Terror, Captain Blubber portrays "The Dashing Adventurer" called "Captain Flash McBlubber", hosting challenges in Acts 2 and 3. In the first one, he wants the duo to race against him so he can practice. Later, he requests that Banjo and Kazooie test his new vehicle, the "Super Sally".

Trivia

  • Despite being a hippo, Captain Blubber is incapable of swimming. In the real world, hippos have the natural ability to swim.
  • In Banjo-Kazooie and its sequel, Banjo-Tooie, Captain Blubber would communicate by using burps and belches. In later games, he started speaking by saying "Yar" and "Yar-Har!"
