Tiptup, Diddy Kong Racing

Tiptup (originally spelled TipTup[1] and alternatively named Tip Top[2]) is a recurring minor character in the Banjo-Kazooie series.

Characteristics[edit]

He is a green turtle with a brown shell.

Behind the scenes[edit]

Tiptup was originally created to appear as a side character in Dream: Land of Giants, before development shifted into Banjo-Kazooie. When naming the racers in Diddy Kong Racing, it was decided to name one of them, a turtle, after the original character from the cancelled project. He then proceeded to be reintegrated into Banjo-Kazooie, due to the team's attachment to the character.[3]

Biography[edit]

Diddy Kong Racing[edit]

In Diddy Kong Racing, Tiptup made his first appearance, like with Banjo. He is classified as a light weight character with excellent handling, medium top speed and high acceleration. Although he doesn't seem to like racing due to his nervous and clumsy nature, he helps his friend Timber to get rid of the evil Wizpig.

Banjo-Kazooie[edit]

Tiptup later reappears in Banjo-Kazooie as a side character in Bubblegloop Swamp. After going inside of Tanktup's shell, Banjo and Kazooie are greeted to Tiptup and his own choir, which will give a Jiggy to them if they can complete their music memory minigame. After leaving Tanktup's shell, Tiptup and his choir are not seen in the shell anymore.

Banjo-Tooie[edit]

Tiptup and his newborn baby son, Tiptup Jr., in Banjo-Tooie.

In Banjo-Tooie, Tiptup reappears with a higher-pitched voice. He is found in Turtle View Cave of Jolly Roger Lagoon with a pink egg. Tiptup tells Kazooie that the egg is yet to hatch after several months. Tiptup anticipates his new child would be a boy because he already has 19 daughters. Kazooie must separate from Banjo and use her hatch ability on the egg. When the egg hatches, the newborn turtle falls on his back, unable to move, and Tiptup asks Kazooie to roll the turtle over. The turtle is a boy, just as Tiptup had hoped, so he names his son Tiptup Jr. Both of them leave for the ocean and leave behind a Jiggy as a reward for Kazooie.

Banjo-Pilot[edit]

In Banjo-Pilot, Tiptup appears in Clanker's River as an obstacle.

Diddy Kong Racing DS[edit]

Despite being a Banjo-Kazooie character, unlike Banjo, Tiptup returns as a playable racer in Diddy Kong Racing DS.

Statistics and flavor text[edit]

Diddy Kong Racing[edit]

  • Manual profile: "(High acceleration, light weight, excellent handling, medium top speed) TipTup the turtle is another member of the close group of animal friends, but because of his nervous (and maybe even slightly clumsy) nature, he's never been particularly fond of the racing that the others seem to like so much. Now, though, he doesn't seem to have much choice!"
  • Official Nintendo Player's Guide profile: "We've all heard how a slow but clever tortoise used his brain to win a race over a swift but stupid hare. In this case, our little turtle will have a little high-tech help getting up to speed. Tiptup is a clever fellow himself, but when the pressure is on, his nervousness can sometimes get the better of him."

  • "Mmm… watch more carefully this time."
  • "Ahhh...splendid! You just need one more lesson."

Banjo-Tooie[edit]

  • "I'm a reptile, not a bird. He's supposed to get out himself."
  • "What are you doing!? That's no way to open the egg. You'll blow my little one to pieces!"
  • "Still no sign of him hatching. I'm getting more worried by the minute!"
  • "It had better be! I already have 19 girls!"
  • "Thank you so much!"
  • "Oh no! He's upside down!"
