“Please help me! Because if I die, your garden will smell of dead fish.”
Roysten, Banjo-Tooie

Roysten is Banjo's pet goldfish, serving little purpose aside from being caught in dangerous situations. He was named after one of the artists that worked on Banjo-Kazooie, who the development team "couldn't believe [had] been given this as a middle name".[1]

History

Banjo-Kazooie

In Banjo-Kazooie, Roysten can be seen in Banjo's house, swimming in his fishbowl. Near the ending, there is a cutscene that shows Mumbo Jumbo cooking Roysten on a barbecue.

Banjo-Tooie

In Banjo-Tooie, Roysten can be seen in Banjo's house, swimming in his fishbowl at the start of the game. After Gruntilda blows up the house, he ends up trapped under a boulder. When Banjo and Kazooie approach it, Roysten explains to them that he was knocked off the barbecue and trapped under a large rock, which he begs them to destroy so that he can be freed. The rock can be destroyed using the Bill Drill ability. Once Roysten is freed, he asks to be put into a body of water, so Banjo puts him in the moat around Spiral Mountain. There, Roysten teaches the Fast Swimming ability to Banjo and Kazooie and increases their oxygen supply from 6 to 10 bubbles.

In the character parade, Roysten is not shown as a standalone character, but there is a cutscene where Roysten is blackened to a crisp on a plate, and Mrs. Bottles serves him to Bottles, angry that he arrived home so late. In the Xbox Live Arcade release of the game, this Roysten's name appears in the scene alongside Bottles'.

Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge

In Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, Roysten makes a cameo in the opening and ending cutscenes, where he is seen on a barbecue outside of Banjo's House, just like in Banjo-Kazooie's ending.

Banjo-Pilot

In Banjo-Pilot, Roysten can be found inside his fishbowl in a shelf of the trophy room. This is the only game where Roysten has orange eyes instead of blue.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Roysten appears in his fishbowl on the main menu and as a Stop 'n' Swop part, only used for cosmetical purposes. It is one of the required parts to make the L.O.G. Banjo vehicle, one of two vehicles (the other being Humba Boat 2) to use a Stop 'n' Swop part.

Other appearances

Roysten makes cameo appearances in two other Rare titles. In Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Roysten can be found in a fishbowl in the classroom of Ghoulhaven Hall. Like in Banjo-Kazooie, Roysten swims around in circles and occasionally taps his bowl three times. In Viva Piñata, Roysten appears as a cosmetic item.
