Bottles is a shortsighted mole and one of the main allies of Banjo and Kazooie in the Banjo-Kazooie series. He is the brother of Jamjars and the descendant of Bozzeye. Bottles is known for his calm and casual personality, contrary to Jamjars' stereotypical drill sergeant behavior.
History
Banjo-Kazooie
In Banjo-Kazooie, Bottles is first seen at the beginning of the game, where he is chatting with Tooty about what she was doing. Suddenly, Gruntilda appears flying in her broomstick and kidnaps girl, taking her to her lair. This leaves Bottles to inform Banjo and Kazooie about what happened to her.
Bottles initially offers to train the duo by teaching them the basic moves as long as they locate his molehills in Spiral Mountain, but this can be refused and Bottles will simply give them all abilities learned in that world at once. He also appears in other worlds throughout the game, teaching other moves. Bottles is seen later in the game, during the celebration of Tooty's rescue eating a corn and falling off his chair after Tooty reminds them that Gruntilda still wasn't defeated yet. During the final battle against the witch, Bottles makes a Flight Pad appear to aid the duo in the fight, allowing them to fly. Lastly, he appears in the ending where he is eating a watermelon in the beach alongside other characters.
Bottles also hosts his moving picture game which can be accessed by looking at his picture inside Banjo's house. He gives a cheat code to input in the Sandcastle of Treasure Trove Cove for every level the duo completes.
Banjo-Tooie
In the intro to Banjo-Tooie, Bottles and his friends are playing cards, being one of the victims of, as well as objecting to, Kazooie's constant cheating. When Mumbo Jumbo warns of Grunty's return, Bottles refuses to evacuate because he thinks Mumbo is lying. Unfortunately, Bottles is killed by the witch's spell that destroys Banjo's House. From this point on, he remains as a ghost near Banjo's house, waiting for the duo to resurrect him.
Bottles' house in Jinjo Village is introduced in this game, which Banjo and Kazooie have to pass through to reach the Wooded Hollow after talking with King Jingaling. The duo meet Bottles' wife Mrs. Bottles, his son Speccy, and his daughter Goggles, and can optionally talk to them, but they can't bring themselves to tell them about Bottles' murder.
Near the end of the game, Banjo and Kazooie use the leftover energy from the Big-O-Blaster to revive Bottles. He runs back to his house, where he is greeted by his angry wife and forced to eat his burnt dinner for being so late. He tries to explain himself by telling her how he was killed and resurrected, but she doesn't believe him. King Jingaling and a reformed Klungo then come into the house, where they all decide to house a party in honor of Banjo and Kazooie's victory. Humorously, Banjo and Kazooie themselves are denied entry to the party until Grunty is defeated. In the ending, the duo, Jamjars, Mumbo Jumbo and Humba Wumba go to Bottles' house to join the party, only to be greeted by a sleeping Bottles, who tells them the party ended early due to Klungo eating most of the food by himself; to everyone else's disappointment.
Although Bottles' brother, Jamjars, acts as the duo's move tutor in this game, Bottles himself gives Banjo and Kazooie optional tutorials on their moves from the first game if they examine his molehills on Spiral Mountain. Before he is revived, his corpse and ghost can be visited near the remains of Banjo's house, where Bottles will lament his body is decomposing and urge Banjo to hurry up.
Bottles also heavily features into a scrapped gameplay mode called Bottles' Revenge. In it, Bottles took on a devilish appearance and allowed a second player could take control of certain enemies to antagonize player one. Although the mode became unused, a face icon for Bottles' devilish appearance can be seen as one of the icons that can appear on selectable answers in the Tower of Tragedy Quiz.
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, it is mentioned that Mrs. Bottles left with the kids due to the trauma of his resurrection, leading him to become the tourist information officer of Showdown Town. According to him, it's the most stressful thing that he has dealt with since his death. He appears in Nutty Acres, LOGBOX 720, Banjoland, and Jiggoseum.
Trivia
- In the beta version of Banjo-Kazooie, Bottles had black-colored goggles rather than red.
- In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, in Banjoland, the back of Bottles's clip board appears to be a picture of himself in his orange jacket.
- In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Bottles will take his glasses off revealing his beady eyes. Despite them not being on his face, the eyes on his glasses still move for an unknown reason.
- Bottles' seems to sometimes be unable to tell the difference between some objects. This is indicated by how he had put a real Jinjo in an exhibit with five models of Jinjos in Banjoland. This Jinjo is involved in a Jinjo mission to take him to the entrance, stating how he was mistaken for an exhibit.
- Bottles makes a cameo appearance on a Club Nintendo comic talking to Mario.
- In Grabbed by the Ghoulies pictures of Devil Bottles can be seen in Ghoulhaven Hall.
- In the French version of the game, rather than threaten to erase the player's save file if he is pestered in Spiral Mountain, he will threaten to destroy the player's television set.
