For every five pages that are found, Cheato will give Banjo and Kazooie one cheat. The cheats can only be activated in the Code Room of Mayahem Temple.

An interesting thing to note is how exactly Gruntilda managed to rip out Cheato's pages. She was previously trapped under a boulder for 2 years after the events of Banjo-Kazooie. Later when she was freed by her sisters, she left Spiral Mountain without visiting her lair. It is possible that she may have ripped out Cheato's pages before kidnapping Kazooie in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, as it is set in between Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie.

Witch lost book, finders bear and bird are, spell they get!”
Cheato, Banjo-Kazooie

Cheato is a recurring character in the Banjo-Kazooie series.

Biography[edit]

Cheato is the magical spell book of Gruntilda. His main role is to provide cheat codes for Banjo and Kazooie to use against Gruntilda in the first two games.

Banjo-Kazooie[edit]

Cheato makes his debut appearance in Banjo-Kazooie. Banjo and Kazooie encounter him while exploring Gruntilda's Lair. Cheato is unhappy with Gruntilda's abusive behavior toward him, so he decides to abandon her and help Banjo and Kazooie instead. Cheato can be found in three different areas throughout the lair, which are hard to reach through regular means or require the use of a certain transformation. Each time Banjo and Kazooie find Cheato, he rewards them with a magic spell, or cheat, which allows them to significantly increase the maximum capacity of eggs and feathers that they can carry. Gruntilda threatened to destroy Cheato for helping the duo, but she was defeated before any damage could be done.

These are the three cheats that Cheato provides to Banjo and Kazooie:

 • BLUE EGGS - Near the Freezeezy Peak puzzle, Banjo must enter a tunnel as a crocodile after destroying the ice block.
 • RED FEATHERS - In the lava room, follow the small winding path to a small tunnel as the pumpkin.
 • GOLD FEATHERS - In the Rusty Bucket Bay entrance room, Banjo must raise the water level to 3 and then go to the alcove before time runs out.

Banjo-Tooie[edit]

In Banjo-Tooie, Cheato is found in the remains of Gruntilda's Lair in Spiral Mountain. Gruntilda ripped out most of Cheato's pages because he provided cheats to Banjo and Kazooie in Banjo-Kazooie. His pages are appropriately known as Cheato Pages, which are scattered around the Isle o' Hags. For every five pages that Banjo and Kazooie return to Cheato, he gives them one cheat. Banjo and Kazooie can activate cheats in Mayahem Temple's Code Room. Furthermore, the duo can input "CHEATO," followed by any known cheat spelled backwards, to activate it regardless of whether the cheat has been unlocked or not.

Banjo-Pilot[edit]

In Banjo-Pilot, Cheato has lost his pages again. The player can acquire them from finish races, and return them to Cheato in exchange for unlockable characters and features.

Nuts & Bolts[edit]

“Hapless page-shedding spellbook, mistreated minion of Grunty and veteran of the Banjo-Kazooie series. Returning Cheato's pages tended to earn unlockable items or, surprisingly, cheat codes.”
Infopost, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Cheato makes a cameo appearance in Banjoland as an exhibit.
