Cheat code

From Jiggywikki, a Banjo-Kazooie wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search

Cheat codes are a recurring feature in the Banjo-Kazooie series. When obtained and applied in certain locations, various things can happen. While called "cheat"s, many of them are considered upgrades or easter eggs, rather than actions that can be considered "cheating".

For readability purposes, all cheats on this page are spelled out with spaces. In-game, they are written and entered without spaces.

Banjo-Kazooie[edit]

In Banjo-Kazooie, cheat codes can be entered by using the Beak Buster on the letters inside Treasure Trove Cove's Sandcastle.

Allowed cheats[edit]

These cheats are not only allowed, but provided and encouraged by the game. When they are typed in, each letter blinks and dings to indicate correct entry.

Upgrades[edit]

Cheato is hiding in three places within Gruntilda's Lair. If the player finds and speaks to him, he will provide a "cheat" that doubles the capacity of usable items.

  • BLUE EGGS - Given by Cheato near the puzzle for Freezeezy Peak. Requires breaking an obstacle with Kazooie, and returning as Crocodile Banjo. Increases the maximum capacity of Blue Eggs from 100 to 200.
  • RED FEATHERS - Given by Cheato near the puzzle for Gobi's Valley. Requires traversing a narrow path as Pumpkin Banjo. Increases the maximum capacity of Red Feathers from 50 to 100.
  • GOLD FEATHERS - Given by Cheato near the entrance to Rusty Bucket Bay. Requires hitting the third water level switch and reaching a passage before time runs out. Increases the maximum capacity of Golden Feathers from 10 to 20.

Bonuses[edit]

Playing Bottles' Moving Picture Game rewards the player with these cheat codes. Most of them are purely cosmetic. Upon rebooting the game, the effects are revoked and the cheats must be re-earned from the beginning.

  • BOTTLES BONUS ONE - Gives Banjo a big head.
  • BOTTLES BONUS TWO - Gives Banjo big hands and feet.
  • BOTTLES BONUS THREE - Gives Kazooie a big head and wings.
  • BOTTLES BONUS FOUR - Gives Banjo a small head, and makes his torso tall and skinny.
  • BOTTLES BONUS FIVE - Does both of TWO and FOUR at the same time.
  • BIG BOTTLES BONUS - Does all of ONE, TWO, and THREE at the same time.
  • WISHY WASHY BANJO - Transforms Banjo into Washing Machine Banjo. This form is not merely cosmetic: he becomes immune to damaging terrain, but he cannot use the Wading Boots or Running Shoes, or carry objects.
  • NO BONUS - Reverts the effects of any of the above bonuses.

Disallowed cheats[edit]

These cheats are not provided by the game, and are treated with various degrees of scorn. They all begin with "CHEAT", with each of those letters producing a long moo sound much like Bigbutt's, followed by a long string of words (usually in rhyme). There is no per-letter feedback, so these cheats cannot be reasonably guessed. Only upon completing the string correctly is there a higher-pitched moo sound to denote its success.

In the XBLA version, entering these cheats will cause Bottles to warn the player that saving, leaderboards, and achievements will be disabled. He then gives the player the opportunity to decline the cheat so this doesn't happen.

Stop 'n' Swop[edit]

These cheats unlock the various items that were intended to be used in Stop 'n' Swop, causing them to appear in their designated positions without fanfare. This is probably not the intended method of unlocking them, but as Stop 'n' Swop was never completed, it is the only way.

These are the only truly permanent cheats: once entered, they affect all save files current and future. It is impossible to restore the game to its previous state, short of physically tampering with the N64 cartridge.

In the XBLA version, the effects of these cheats are active from the beginning.

Infinite items[edit]

These cheats provide an infinite supply of certain items, or just "a high number" for some of them. The number counters for such items may appear to behave oddly. Most of these cheats go away upon rebooting the game.

  • CHEAT BANJO BEGS FOR PLENTY OF EGGS - Provides infinite Blue Eggs.
  • CHEAT NOW YOU CAN FLY HIGH IN THE SKY - Provides infinite Red Feathers.
  • CHEAT A GOLDEN GLOW TO PROTECT BANJO - Provides infinite Gold Feathers.
  • CHEAT GIVE THE BEAR LOTS OF AIR - Provides infinite oxygen.
  • CHEAT LOTS OF GOES WITH MANY BANJOS - Provides infinite Extra Lives.
  • CHEAT DONT BE A DUMBO GO SEE MUMBO - Sets the current Mumbo Token count to 99. Since only 75 are needed, this is practically infinite.
  • CHEAT AN ENERGY BAR TO GET YOU FAR - Sets the player's health bar to have eight Honeycombs, whether this would be an improvement or not.

Developer cheats[edit]

These are the "real" cheats, opening doors and unlocking moves before they are supposed to be. Should the player use two of these and try a third, Gruntilda will threaten to delete the current save file. If the player ignores this warning, it will be carried out upon activating the third cheat.

Open worlds[edit]
  • CHEAT THIS COMES IN HANDY TO OPEN SOMEWHERE SANDY - Opens the entrance to Treasure Trove Cove. While this has no effect in the final game, since the player must have already done so legitimately to access the Sandcastle, it may have been useful for the developers depending on the exact nature of how the game was being debugged.

Banjo-Tooie[edit]

In Banjo-Tooie, cheat codes can be entered within the Code Chamber of Mayahem Temple by using Egg Aiming to shoot letters on the wall. Once entered, cheats can be turned on and off by interacting with a signpost in the room, and do not need to be entered again.

Unlockables[edit]

These cheats are upgrades provided by certain characters. When they are typed in, each letter glows and dings to indicate correct entry.

From Cheato[edit]

For every 5 Cheato Pages turned in, Cheato provides the next cheat on this list.

  • FEATHERS - Doubles maximum capacity for all feather types.
  • EGGS - Doubles maximum capacity for all egg types.
  • FALLPROOF - Removes fall damage. Characters still lose control and land hard when falling too far, they just do not take damage for it.
  • HONEYBACK - After about 2 seconds of not taking damage, 1 health is restored about every 3 seconds.
  • JUKEBOX - Enables the jukebox at Jolly's.

From Heggy[edit]

Bringing Heggy the Blue Mystery Egg will have her offer this cheat.

  • HOMING - Eggs will home in on enemies. Clockwork Kazooie Eggs will try, but they will not get very far before hatching as usual.

From Madame Grunty[edit]

Being sufficiently lucky when visiting Madame Grunty's Tent will unlock this cheat.

  • GET JIGGY - Changes the signposts in Jiggywiggy's Temple so that each one states a hint for every Jiggy in each world.

Hidden cheats[edit]

These are the more serious cheats that are not intended to be learned naturally. They all begin with "CHEATO", and only those letters light up while the cheat is being typed in. There is no per-letter feedback, so these cheats cannot be reasonably guessed. Only upon completing the string correctly is there success.

In the XBLA version, entering these cheats will cause Jamjars to warn the player that saving, leaderboards, and achievements will be disabled. He then gives the player the opportunity to decline the cheat so this doesn't happen.

Unlockables, but cheating[edit]

Each unlockable cheat also has a "cheating for real" version, which allows the cheats to be entered even if they have not yet been properly unlocked. This is done by entering CHEATO, followed by the cheat with the letters in reverse order.

  • CHEATO SREHTAEF - "FEATHERS"
  • CHEATO SGGE - "EGGS"
  • CHEATO FFORPLLAF - "FALLPROOF"
  • CHEATO KCABYENOH - "HONEYBACK"
  • CHEATO XOBEKUJ - "JUKEBOX"
  • CHEATO GNIMOH - "HOMING"
  • CHEATO YGGIJ TEG - "GET JIGGY"

Others[edit]

  • CHEATO NEST KING - Provides infinite amounts of all feather and egg types. Inventory is displayed as "LOTS". While a "real" cheat, it is hinted at by a signpost outside Jiggywiggy's Temple, which reads "An egg container followed by Jingaling?".
  • CHEATO HONEY KING - Provides infinite health.
  • CHEATO SUPER BANJO - Increases the player's speed.
  • CHEATO SUPER BADDY - Increases the speed of most enemies.
  • CHEATO JIGGYWIGGY SPECIAL - Opens every world.
  • CHEATO JIGGYS CAST LIST - Allows the character parade to be viewed without having collected all Jiggies.
  • CHEATO PLAY IT AGAIN SON - Unlocks every replay, mini-game, and cutscene.

Trivia[edit]

  • The letter Q is never used in any cheat in either game, and is in fact the only letter missing from the Sandcastle floor. The Code Chamber has all letters even though no cheat in Banjo-Tooie uses V or Z either.
