Musical Notes made their debut in Banjo-Kazooie, where they are used to open various Note Doors throughout Gruntilda's Lair. Each world contains 100 Notes and every Note that Banjo and Kazooie collect adds to their total Note Score for that world. However, the Notes themselves cannot be taken out of the world due to Grunty's magic, so they will be reset if Banjo and Kazooie die or leave the world. This means that if any Notes are missed, they will have to be collected all over again, similar to Jinjos. In the Xbox Live Arcade remake, Musical Notes taken from worlds will not reset, allowing for an easier time in gathering any missed Notes. (Saving the collection state of all 100 Notes in each world was apparently too much for N64 hardware.) Note Doors will open if the total note scores from all the combined worlds is at least equal to or greater than the number shown on the door. There are a total of 900 Notes in the game and you will get an achievement for collecting all 900 in the XBLA version.

In Banjo-Tooie, Notes are used as a requirement to learn moves taught by Jamjars, as well as finding the corresponding Silo. The system of collecting Notes has changed - Notes are found in groups of five called Note Nests, as well as Treble Clefs that are worth 20 Notes. Because this only leaves 17 things per world to collect for Notes (100 Notes per world - 16 Nests and 1 Treble Clef), the game is able to save their collection state (that is, they do not need to be re-collected). There are also a total of 900 Notes in the game.
In Banjo-Tooie, Banjo and Kazooie must collect a certain number of Musical Notes for Jamjars to teach them a new ability. Musical Notes are no longer scattered around the level individually, but instead appear in Note Nests in groups of five. Every level still has a total of 100 Musical Notes, one of them being a Treble Clef, worth 20 Musical Notes. The remaining 80 Musical Notes appear in each of the 16 Note Nests across the level. Unlike the first game, every Musical Note remains collected, meaning that they do not reappear on the world map when Banjo and Kazooie leave or restart a level.

Like its predecessor, a total of 900 Musical Notes appear in Banjo-Tooie. They appear in Isle o' Hags and every level except for Cauldron Keep.

Just like Banjo-Tooie, Notes are used to learn new moves in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge. There are again 100 Notes per world, which can be found both individually or (rarely) in Nests of 5. Notes are collected permanently. There are a total of 600 Notes in the game.

Four Notes are placed around every track in Banjo-Pilot, always in the same place. They are used to multiply the amount of Cheato Pages you earn after the race. The more you get, the more pages you will have to trade with Cheato. If all four are collected, a special song plays.

Musical Notes, also known as Notes, are a main collectible item that appears in Banjo-Kazooie game.

Musical Notes are golden musical notes that are usually a joined pair of quavers (eighth-notes). In Nuts & Bolts, they were changed to semi-quavers (sixteenth-notes). Although their appearance is usually the same in each appearance, Musical Notes have a different purpose in each game.

History

Banjo-Kazooie

Banjo obtaining some Musical Notes from a tree in Treasure Trove Cove.

Musical Notes first appear in Banjo-Kazooie, where they are used to open the Note Doors located throughout Gruntilda's Lair. Each level consists of 100 Musical Notes, and for each one that Banjo and Kazooie collect, it is added to that level's best Musical Note score.

Due to Gruntilda's magic, Musical Notes cannot be taken out of their level, so if Banjo and Kazooie lose a life or leave the level, the Musical Notes return back to their original locations (just like the Jinjos), even after they have obtained every Note. If Banjo and Kazooie have not obtained every Musical Note, they must recollect the ones they have previously obtained along with ones they have not yet obtained until they get all 100. In the Xbox Live Arcade port, the Notes are not reset when they exit a level or lose a life.

When Banjo and Kazooie approach a Note Door, their total number of obtained Musical Notes is displayed in a corner. They can only open the Note Door by having at least a minimum of the number shown on the Note Door.

Bottles reminds Banjo and Kazooie of their best Note score when they enter a level or after they lose a life. He also congratulates them when they have obtained the 100th Note in the level. In the original version, Bottles also congratulates the duo if they surpassed their previous Note score.

There are a total of 900 Musical Notes, owing to the nine levels. In the Xbox Live Arcade port, if the player has obtained every Note, they unlock the "Music Maestro" achievement (worth 25G).

Banjo-Tooie

Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge

In Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, Musical Notes have a similar purpose as in Banjo-Tooie, as Banjo and Kazooie must collect Musical Notes to learn new abilities from Bozzeye. The Musical Notes are usually scattered across the world map individually, but may sometimes appear in a Note Nest. Every level still has 100 Musical Notes, including the hub world, Spiral Mountain. There are a total of 600 Musical Notes to collect.

Banjo-Pilot

A Musical Note in the Spiral Mountain course of Banjo-Pilot

In Banjo-Pilot, there are four Musical Notes scattered in a set location for every course. If the player obtains each one, they receive more Cheato Pages after completing the race. By collecting a Musical Note, it briefly displays on screen with the other Musical Notes. When all four are collected, a small fanfare plays, and the four Notes individually slide off screen.

They replace the K-O-N-G Letters from the 2003 Diddy Kong Pilot.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Musical Notes are used as currency in Showdown Town. Banjo can purchase blueprints, vehicle parts, tips from Bottles, or even bribe Pikelet to keep the Showdown Town Police off his case. If Banjo bribes the police too much, he cannot afford any essential collectibles, such as Jiggys.

Musical Notes appear in a few colors: bronze Notes are worth 1, silver Notes are worth 5, and Gold Notes are worth 10. Notes are scattered around the world individually (with 200 per world, and 900 in Showdown Town), but can also be earned from completing challenges, playing Jinjo Bingo, or completing various other minor tasks. A total of 5,230 Musical Notes are featured, 120 in L.O.G.'s Lost Challenges, further increasing the number to 5,350 Notes.
