Beehives are passive enemies found in every Banjo-Kazooie platformer to date. As their name implies, they're not much more than wooden beehives. Present in nearly every world, Beehives bounce up and down innocently and are defenseless against attacks by hungry honey bears. It only takes a single swipe, and defeating one yields three tasty honeycombs, making them more of a free source of energy rather than obstacles.

Although Beehives are harmless, they are not always defenseless. Some Beehives in later worlds of Banjo-Kazooie (from Gobi's Valley and onwards) can be seen with a swarm of bees buzzing around them. They will happily ignore Banjo until the Beehive is destroyed, at which point the enraged insects will chase and sting him relentlessly until he can move safely out of their range. Angry bees cannot be harmed by most attacks and will not leave Banjo alone until he leaves the place that the beehive was destroyed, but can be dispatched by using the Wonderwing. Swarms of bees without hives can also be seen in Click Clock Wood during the summertime. These swarms will attack without any provocation and they have no behive. Since bee swarms take an absolute minimum of two Golden Feathers to kill completely, often the best course of action is simply to avoid them. Bee swarms also appear in Spillerston of Spiller's Harbor in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, and although they move much faster and sting for more damage, they are much easier to kill with the Wonderwing.

“Go away! Leave my Honeycombs alone!”
Beehive, Banjo-Kazooie

Beehives are recurring enemies in the Banjo-Kazooie series.

Characteristics[edit]

As their name implies, they are sentient beehives that contain Honeycombs, being useful as free source of energy for Banjo and Kazooie. However, not all of Beehives are harmless, as in later worlds some have Bee Swarms that attack the duo if they break it.

Banjo-Kazooie[edit]

In their first appearance, Banjo-Kazooie, Beehives appear every world (with the only exception being Spiral Mountain), first being found in Mumbo's Mountain. While at first they are completely defenseless, starting from Gobi's Valley, they will be accompanied of Bee Swarms that attack Banjo and Kazooie if they try to break the Beehive and get Honeycombs. Aside from Quarries, Beehives are the only enemies that do not directly attack Banjo and Kazooie.

Banjo-Tooie[edit]

In Banjo-Tooie, while Bee Swarms are absent, later worlds feature Cursed Beehives that disguise themselves as normal Beehives to attack the duo when they get near them but can be differentiated by their red eyes. Additionally, the normal Beehive's dialogue icon from the previous game is used in the Tower of Tragedy Quiz.

Grunty's Revenge[edit]

Beehives return in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, acting much like they did in Banjo-Kazooie.

Banjo-Pilot[edit]

In Banjo-Pilot, Beehives appear as obstacles in the Jolly Roger's Lagoon course. They also appear as the symbol of the Beehive Cup.

Nuts & Bolts[edit]

In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, a Beehive appears as part of an exhibit in Banjoland.
