“Grraar...This Conga's tree! Me hit bear with oranges!”
Conga, Banjo-Kazooie

Conga is a recurring character in the Banjo-Kazooie series.

Physical traits[edit]

Conga is a large gorilla. In Banjo-Kazooie, he wears a red shirt with black trousers and shoes. In Banjo-Tooie, he wears circus attire, including a red carnival hat and a red jacket.

In some beta footage of Banjo-Kazooie, Conga can be seen wearing a white shirt.[2]

Biography[edit]

Banjo-Kazooie[edit]

In Banjo-Kazooie, his debut appearance Conga is located in Mumbo's Mountain, where he stands atop an orange tree. There are two Jiggies that Banjo and Kazooie can obtain from him. If they go near Conga, he starts throwing an endless supply of oranges at them. One of Conga's Jiggies is buried under the ground. To obtain it, Banjo and Kazooie must trick Conga into throwing an orange at each of the three Orange Switches on the ground. By doing so, the Jiggy pops out from the ground. Conga's other Jiggy can be obtained after Chimpy has raised the nearby tree stump. From there, Banjo and Kazooie can jump on a higher platform, where they can attack Conga by firing eggs at him. Every time Conga is hit, he starts throwing more oranges at Banjo and Kazooie. After taking seven hits, Conga is defeated, and the duo are rewarded another Jiggy.

Banjo-Tooie[edit]

In Banjo-Tooie, Conga is found in Witchyworld, where he works as the ticket taker of the Big Top tent. He only allows Banjo and Kazooie to enter if they have all four tickets and have learned the Airborne Egg Aiming move. If both requirements are met, Conga lets them in, telling them to "enjoy the show" before leaving.

Nuts & Bolts[edit]

In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, a portrait of Conga in Banjo-Kazooie can be found next to the Click Clock Wood Tree exhibit in Banjoland. He is also directly referenced in Mumbo Jumbo's description for the Citrus Slick vehicle part, where he claims to have stolen Conga's oranges to make it.

Other appearances[edit]

In Grabbed by the Ghoulies, a monstrous version of Conga's head appears in the Trophy Room of Ghoulhaven Hall.

In Viva Piñata and Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise, "Conga's Top Hat" appears as an accessory for piñatas.

The battle against Conga in Banjo-Kazooie was referenced in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate trailer, "Best Friends," where Banjo & Kazooie, alongside Diddy Kong, team up to take out a white Donkey Kong with an orange nearby.

Trivia[edit]

  • In Banjo-Kazooie, if Banjo approaches Conga in the form of a termite, Conga refers to himself as "Congo."
  • Early footage of Banjo-Kazooie reveals that, at one point in development, Conga also threw coconuts in addition to oranges.[2]
  • In the canceled Banjo X, Conga would have been aware of his defeat in the original Banjo-Kazooie and therefore change his battle strategy.[3]
