“Drill Sergeant Jamjars reporting f'duty, sir!”
Jamjars, Banjo-Tooie

Jamjars is a character in Banjo-Tooie.

Characteristics[edit]

Jamjars is a mole and the brother of Bottles. Unlike his sibling, Jamjars is an assertive drill sergeant and one of the main supporting characters in Banjo-Tooie, where he takes over Bottles' role of teaching moves to Banjo and Kazooie, both together and separately.

Biography[edit]

Banjo-Tooie[edit]

Jamjars teaches a move to Banjo in Banjo-Tooie

In Banjo-Tooie, Jamjars is found in hatches that are located around the Isle o' Hags and its levels. Jamjars can first be encountered at Mayahem Temple, where he learns of Bottles' death from Banjo and Kazooie. As such, Jamjars agrees to help the duo on their adventure by teaching them moves along the way. Whenever Banjo and Kazooie collect a type of item the first time, even before meeting Jamjars, he explains the item and its purpose to them. Furthermore, Jamjars allows Banjo and Kazooie to use his network of silos to quickly travel between areas.

Unlike Bottles, Jamjars charges the duo Musical Notes before teaching his "advanced techniques" to them. Whenever Jamjars teaches a move, he marches to a military theme, and he rhymes as he explains the move to Banjo and Kazooie. After this, Jamjars dismisses them and jumps back into his hatch, which has its light change to green. Occasionally, after Jamjars teaches a move and opens the hatch to leave, it closes before before Jamjars can enter, causing him to hit his head. Jamjars crawls back into the hatch and opens it once more to grab his hat. If the B Button button is pressed while Banjo and Kazooie stand next to a green-lighted silo, Jamjars quickly recapitulates how to use the move that the duo learned at that Silo. Similarly to Bottles, if Banjo or Kazooie's health bar is low while they learn a move from Jamjars, he provides "rations" to instantly refill it.

If Mumbo Jumbo tries to interact with Jamjars, he tells him that "Jamjars' advanced training school is for bears and birds only."

Oftentimes, when Banjo and Kazooie read a signpost or if they try and enter an off-limits area, Jamjars talks to them (as shown from his speech icon), although without being physically present. Jamjars' head icon also represents the Miscellaneous section of the jukebox in the bar, Jolly's.

In the ending, Jamjars arrives at the party at Bottles' House, expecting to have a party, only to find that Klungo had eaten all the food. He then goes to Cauldron Keep with his friends to play a game of kickball using Grunty's head.

Jamjars is playable in the multiplayer shooting minigames. He has eight Honeycombs and, while being the second slowest character (with the first one being Gruntilda), is still a small target, making it hard to land a hit on him.

Jamjars teaches Banjo and Kazooie a total of 24 different moves throughout their adventure:

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts[edit]

In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Jamjars is shown to have become the DJ of Spiral Mountain F.M. Through a radio machine, he tells Banjo and Kazooie that it has been 10 years since they were both invented and says that they're "all fat and washed up" now.

Jamjars was, however, originally planned to have a bigger role in the game. When the layout of Showdown Town was still being designed, he ran the gym instead of Boggy.[1]

Other appearances[edit]

In Viva Piñata, Piñatas can wear an accessory named "Jam-Jars Hat" which appears as part of the Banjo-Kazooie-themed Accessory Pack 6. The accessory returns in Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise.

Flavor text[edit]

Banjo-Tooie[edit]

  • Manual profile: "Having joined the mole military when he was just a nipper, Sergeant Jamjars is as different to his brother Bottles as chalk is to cheese. Those years of rigid rodent discipline may explain his lack of manners and sense of humor, but his advanced ability training will be essential if the bear and bird are to stand a chance of defeating the evil coven."

Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise[edit]

  • Jam-Jars Hat description: "Sgt. Jam-Jars taught Banjo and Kazooie how to survive without each other and that going solo was sometimes the best way to tackle obstacles. His teachings and methods were branded reckless and dangerous by his wimpy brother, Bottles."

Trivia[edit]

  • In Banjo-Kazooie, when Banjo and Kazooie come to one of Bottles' first molehills in Spiral Mountain, Kazooie refers to Bottles as "Jamjars." Jamjars is also an incorrect answer for Bottles when Grunty asks a trivia question in Grunty's Furnace Fun.
  • While in the original release of Banjo-Tooie Jamjars' songs used the buttons that needed to be pressed in order to perform the moves taught in their rhymes, in the Xbox Live Arcade release, due to the Xbox 360 controller and the Nintendo 64 controller having different buttons, some do not rhyme.
  • During development, the Lord of Games was used as a placeholder head for Jamjars' dialogue through the radio in the introduction sequence of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.[2]
