Rippers are tombstone enemies in the Banjo-Kazooie series. Their appearance is very similar to regular tombstones, which they often disguise themselves as. Rippers appear in varying sizes and have a pair of bulbous eyes, clawed hands, and stone-shaped feet. Their name is most likely derived from the acronym "R.I.P.", which is short for "rest in peace".
History
Banjo-Kazooie
In Banjo-Kazooie, Rippers are found in Mad Monster Mansion and, after visiting the world at least once, its hub area in Gruntilda's Lair. Rippers disguise themselves as regular tombstones, so when Banjo and Kazooie approach a Ripper, it pops out, revealing itself, and starts to chase the duo. A way to distinguish Rippers from ordinary tombstones is that the Rippers fade away in the draw distance unlike the regular tombstones, which are part of the level geometry. The Rippers and ordinary tombstones in Gruntilda's Lair are much larger than those of Mad Monster Mansion.
Because they are made of stone, Rippers are durable, so it takes several hits for Banjo and Kazooie to defeat them. Kazooie can instantly defeat a Ripper if she uses a Rat-a-tat Rap move on it from behind.
