“The time has come to end this game, the future cannot be the same. To your destruction you both race, to bear and bird I'll leave no trace! My victory will be most splendid, when I rule all, and your life's ended!”
Mecha-Grunty, Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge

Mecha-Grunty, also known as Mecha-Gruntilda[1], is a large, mechanical body that was created by Klungo. It hosted Gruntilda's spirit during the events of Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, making it the main antagonist of the game.

History

Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge

Ever since Grunty was crushed under a boulder in Banjo-Kazooie's ending, Klungo has been trying for two months to rescue Gruntilda. Two months later, however, Klungo invented a Mecha-Grunty machine which sucked in Grunty's spirit from the rock that Grunty was trapped under. Mecha-Grunty proceeds to kidnap Kazooie and travel back in time to enact her latest plan, which is to prevent Banjo and Kazooie from meeting and erase her defeat at their hands from history. Mumbo Jumbo uses magic to send Banjo in the past as well so that he can go after Mecha-Grunty.

The first battle against Mecha-Grunty takes place in Breegull Beach. When she is defeated, Banjo and Kazooie reunite for the rest of their adventure. There are several battles against Mecha-Grunty, each one being different from the previous. In one battle, Mecha-Grunty attacks by shooting lasers at Banjo and Kazooie. In other battles, Mecha-Grunty surrounds herself with shockwaves to defend herself. Two battles have Mecha-Grunty hovering up the air and trying to crush Banjo and Kazooie by landing on them. In most battles, except the third-person egg shooter battle, Banjo and Kazooie must wait for Mecha-Grunty to perform her signature laugh, which is when her shockwaves disappear. This gives Banjo a brief opportunity to perform a Forward Roll to attack Mecha-Grunty.

In the ending, when Mecha-Grunty is defeated, the robot collapses, and Grunty's soul returns to her body. She tells Klungo to fetch her sisters, thus starting the events of Banjo-Tooie.

General information

Physical appearance

Mecha-Grunty is an intimidating robot built in the likeness of Grunty herself, complete with claws, a large drill acting her hat, and a pair of glowing green eyes. Its body is a titanic drill covered in sheets of sturdy scrap metal and various mechanisms. Originally inanimate, Mecha-Grunty came to life when Grunty's spirit entered it. The robot has a few bugs such as a weak force field. Mecha-Grunty makes use of weapons and gadgets over magic installed in the robot.

Mecha-Grunty's body is a drill and there is a tag-plate on its waist that reads "HAG 1". This largely implies that the Hag 1 was made from Mecha-Grunty's wreckage.

Trivia

  • Mecha-Grunty was planned to have different forms in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge such as a tank form or a bazooka form, but these were scrapped to save cartridge space.[2]
