Like ''Super Mario 64'' before it, the player proceeds through the game by finding tokens. There are three kinds of tokens that help the player progress through the game, namely jigsaw pieces, musical notes, and [[Mumbo Token]]s. Banjo and Kazooie must collect items that are used in performing certain moves. Bottles teach Banjo and Kazooie a move in some of the earlier levels (the last one being [[Gobi's Valley]]) before the item can be utilized.
