Location and uses
The Ice Key, as its name implies, is a large key made of ice. It is one of the players in the Stop 'n' Swop mystery, first being found in Banjo-Kazooie, and again in Banjo-Tooie where it can be utilized.
The Ice Key is one of the seven Stop 'n' Swop items, aside from the six Mystery Eggs. It is a key made entirely of ice.

In Banjo-Kazooie, the Ice Key is found in Wozza's cave in a large alcove, although the room is blocked by an unbreakable transparent wall. Entering the code "CHEAT NOW YOU CAN SEE A NICE ICE KEY WHICH YOU CAN HAVE FOR FREE" on the Sandcastle floor in Treasure Trove Cove will dissolve the wall, allowing the player to get the key; however, as with the other Stop 'n' Swop items, it has no apparent function in Banjo-Kazooie.

In Banjo-Kazooie, its first appearance, the Ice Key appears in a large alcove in Wozza's Cave, although it is blocked off by an indestructible wall of ice.

To dissolve the wall, Banjo and Kazooie must enter the Sandcastle of Treasure Trove Cove and enter "CHEAT NOW YOU CAN SEE A NICE ICE KEY WHICH YOU CAN HAVE FOR FREE" (without spaces). When the duo obtain the Ice Key, it appears in the Stop 'n' Swop menu. However, the Ice Key does not have any other purpose in the game.
In the Xbox Live Arcade version entering the cheat, will cause saving to stop and prevent your scores being loaded to the leaderboard, however having a Banjo-Kazooie (XBLA) or Nuts & Bolts save file will make it accessible.

In the Xbox Live Arcade release of Banjo-Kazooie, the method for obtaining the Ice Key was changed. Here, it cannot be obtained unless the console has a save file for the Xbox Live Arcade release of Banjo-Tooie or Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.
Banjo-Tooie
In Banjo-Tooie, it is possible to obtain the Ice Key without the use of cheats. In Jinjo Village, just to the right of the entrance, there is a small icy cavern which can be accessed using the Grip Grab. There is a Banjo-Kazooie Game Pak inside which will yield the precious Ice Key when defeated. However in Banjo-Tooie (XBLA the Game Pak contains the Gold Mystery Egg and the Ice Key will automatically be in your collected items if it was obtained in Banjo-Kazooie (XBLA.

Take the Ice Key to the Waterfall Cavern in Glitter Gulch Mine and use the Talon Torpedo learned from Jolly Roger's Lagoon on the Kazooie boulder in the water. Swim through the tunnel that opens up to a large room on the Icy Side of Hailfire Peaks containing a gigantic ice safe. The key can be used to unlock the safe, revealing the powerful Mega-Glowbo which can be brought to Humba Wumba in the Pine Grove to transform Kazooie into the fearsome Dragon Kazooie.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
In Banjo-Tooie, Banjo and Kazooie can obtain the Ice Key by destroying a Banjo-Kazooie Game Pak enemy in Jinjo Village. After obtaining it, the duo must enter the Waterfall Cavern of Glitter Gulch Mine, destroy a Talon Torpedo Door, and swim through the tunnel leading to the icy portion of Hailfire Peaks. The Ice Key is used to unlock a large safe with the powerful Mega-Glowbo.
In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, if the Ice Key is collected in Banjo-Kazooie (XBLA it will activate a crate on the roof of Boggy's Gym. This crate gives you the British flag.

In the Xbox Live Arcade release of Banjo-Tooie, the Ice Key can no longer be obtained by defeating the Banjo-Kazooie Game Pak. Instead, it needs to be collected in the Xbox Live Arcade release of Banjo-Kazooie, where it will automatically be transfered to this game. The original location of the Ice Key in Banjo-Tooie was replaced here with the Gold Mystery Egg.
The Ice Key can also be seen in Banjoland stuck in the melted Snowman and in the Terrarium of Terror where it is must be collected as a Jinjo Fetch item. The Jinjo says he will "swop" the Ice Key for a Jinjo Token and after receiving it says that he will ponder over the mystery of it.

Stop 'n' Swop
In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, there is an imprint of the Ice Key on Boggy's Gym. If the Ice Key was obtained in Banjo-Kazooie, a Mumbo Crate appears on the roof of the gym. By taking it to Mumbo's Motors, the player unlocks the British flag for a vehicle customization option.

The Ice Key itself makes a cameo in the melted Snowman of Banjoland, and can also be found in garbage next to Banjo's House.

In the Terrarium of Terror, the Jinjo Fetch of Act 4 involves getting the Ice Key found near the sleeping aliens underwater and bringing it back to a Yellow Jinjo who says he will "swop" the Ice Key in exchange for a Jinjo Token. If the challenge is failed, the Jinjo says he "might as well stop looking and swop the key for something else," and proceeds to ask where the "funny looking-eggs" went. After receiving the key, he says he can go back to his "obsession with the pointless and frustrating mystery of the key."

Trivia
*There is ASCII text for "ICE KEY" hidden in Donkey Kong 64. By using a GameShark code, the player can even add it to the "Totals" menu (although it has no icon). The Ice Key cannot be removed after being adding, even if the player starts a new save file. Like with Banjo-Kazooie, the Ice Key does has no function, and its intended purpose is unknown.
*Originally, Mumbo Jumbo was going to make an appearance in Viva Piñata. According to Ed Bryan, to make him appear in the garden, it required a scrapped Ice Key decoration.
