Spiral Mountain is a signature location of the Banjo-Kazooie series, having appeared in every game. The location is named after its main landmark of a large spiraling hill located in the center. Spiral Mountain is also where Banjo and Kazooie live, as well as Banjo's pet goldfish Roysten.

Overview[edit]

Spiral Mountain is the starting location in every Banjo-Kazooie game. It is also a tutorial area, where the player is taught basic controls and moves. Spiral Mountain is a grassy area featuring a vegetable orchard, a quarry, two waterfalls forming a lake (an alcove appears behind one of them), a few tree stumps, and Banjo's House. There is a moat surrounding the main spiraling hill. There is a bridge connected on top of the hill, connected to a large stone structure of Gruntilda's face. The mouth of the structure leads into Gruntilda's Lair.

History[edit]

Banjo-Kazooie[edit]

A view of Spiral Mountain in Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo walking around Spiral Mountain

In Banjo-Kazooie, the game introduction takes place in Spiral Mountain, and is where Grunty kidnaps Tooty. During gameplay, this is where Bottles teaches some basic moves to the duo, including Claw Swipe, Forward Roll, Rat-a-tat Rap, Feathery Flap, Flap Flip, and Beak Barge. After Bottles teaches them the six moves, they must go on top of the spiraling hill, where Bottles repairs the bridge to Gruntilda's Lair. From there, the duo can continue onward into the lair.

From the first molehill, Bottles gives Banjo and Kazooie an option to learn the six moves. Alternatively, by deciding against it, Bottles, provides them with all six moves, and the duo can directly skip to meeting him at the top of the spiraling hill.

After Banjo and Kazooie learn every move (or acquire them from the first molehill), Colliwobbles, Toppers, Bawls, and Quarries appear as enemies around the location. Contrary to Bottles' training, they are able to injure Banjo and Kazooie.

In the end, after Banjo and Kazooie defeat Grunty in the final boss battle, she falls off the Top of the Tower and into the ground of Spiral Mountain. A large rock falls from above, trapping her below.

Banjo-Tooie[edit]

Spiral Mountain in Banjo-Tooie, after being damaged by Grunty and her sisters.

In Banjo-Tooie, Spiral Mountain is heavily damaged by the Hag 1, a machine operated by Grunty's sisters, Mingella and Blobbelda. In the opening cutscene, the sisters drill through Spiral Mountain's cliffs, and they lift up the rock that trapped Gruntilda beneath the ground and free Grunty. In an act of vengeance, Gruntilda uses a spell to destroy Banjo's House. Her sisters release Uggers and Gruntydactyls into the area and tell them to destroy the location further, and they leave Spiral The bridge connecting to Gruntilda's Lair is shown to have been destroyed by the Hag 1.

Spiral Mountain is revealed as part of the greater Isle o' Hags. From here, Banjo and Kazooie can visit the other Isle o' Hags areas by going through a path dug by the Hag 1. In the cave, before Banjo and Kazooie can continue to later areas, they must defeat Klungo in their first boss battle.

During Spiral Mountain's destruction, Roysten became trapped beneath a boulder. Later on, when the duo learn Bill Drill, they can break open the rock and free Roysten. As a reward, Roysten teaches them the Fast Swimming ability.

There are two Banjo-Kazooie Game Paks in Spiral Mountain, and by destroying them, Banjo and Kazooie can respectively obtain the blue and the purple Mystery Egg. Spiral Mountain only has one Jinjo, which is located behind a Talon Torpedo Door.

Spiral Mountain's melody is generally the same as in Banjo-Kazooie except for being in minor key to fit the ruination and melancholic atmosphere of the location.

Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge[edit]

Banjo exploring Spiral Mountain in the past.

In the midquel, Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, the game starts in Spiral Mountain, set two months after Grunty was trapped beneath a rock. Klungo designed the Mecha-Grunty suit as a way to transplant Grunty's spirit, to free her beneath the rock. Mecha-Grunty kidnaps Kazooie and goes back in time, hoping to prevent the duo from meeting. Mumbo Jumbo uses his magic to also send Banjo back in time.

Banjo ends up in a past version of Spiral Mountain, which has an entirely different appearance from the present one. Banjo meets Bozzeye, the ancestor of Bottles; by having at least ten Musical Notes and visiting the next molehill, Banjo learns Pack Whack, which is the only new move he learns in Spiral Mountain.

Spiral Mountain is the hub area and other levels are accessed from it. There are two higher areas of Spiral Mountain which Banjo can explore, in order of Spiral Rise and Spiral Mere. Jiggywiggy's Temple is located at the southeast of the main Spiral Mountain area. This is where Banjo can open portals to the other levels, if he has enough Jiggies. The entrances to the first two levels, Cliff Farm and Breegull Beach, are in the lowest area of Spiral Mountain. The later levels are accessed from its two higher locations: Bad Magic Bayou is accessed from Spiral Rise, and Spiller's Harbor and Freezing Furnace from Spiral Mere. The final area, Grunty's Castle, appears at the east of Spiral Rise, and a large rock shaped as King Jingaling's head appears below, adjacent to Grunty's Castle.

Honey B.'s Hive is located in Spiral Rise, where Banjo can exchange his Hollow Honeycombs for additional honeycomb segments to his health bar. The Jinjo Oracle of Spiral Mountain appears on a ledge to the north of Jiggywiggy's Temple. The five Jinjos of Spiral Mountain are purple.

There are six enemies in Spiral Mountain and its higher locations, including: Beehives, Boom Boxes, Gruntlings, Gruntweeds, red Spookos, and Whiplashes. This is the most enemies that Spiral Mountain has of the other Banjo-Kazooie games.

Banjo-Pilot[edit]

In Banjo-Pilot, a course based on Spiral Mountain (even sharing a name with it) is included as the very first course. It is the first course of the Honeycomb Cup, otherwise the Pumpkin Cup in Grunty GP. The theme is entirely different from the usual Spiral Mountain theme, as it was originally composed for some jungle race tracks in the 2003 Diddy Kong Pilot.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts[edit]

In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Spiral Mountain is shown to have recovered from the damage it took in Banjo-Tooie. Banjo and Kazooie can return to here from Showdown Town if they have at least 75 Jiggies. Bawls are the only regular enemy in this area. This is the setting of where Banjo and Kazooie engage in a final battle against Gruntilda, and is also where the ending cutscene takes place. Mumbo Jumbo, Bottles, Piddles, Jolly Dodger, Captain Blubber, Trophy Thomas, Humba Wumba and the Jinjos appear here during the ending.

Collectibles[edit]

Banjo-Kazooie[edit]

Extra Honeycombs:

  • Defeat all the Quarries once you have learned the Beak Barge ability.
  • Defeat all the enemies in the veggie garden or defeat the lone Colliwobble if the tutorial is skipped.
  • On one of the tree stumps where the duo learns their jumping abilities.
  • On top of the tree next to where you learn how to swim.
  • On a ledge between waterfalls. The Feathery Flap is required.
  • In a small cave underwater, underneath the bridge.

Extra Lives:

  • In an alcove behind the large waterfall; Kazooie must use Feathery Flap between platforms.
  • Hovering over Banjo's chimney. Either scale the house by jumping onto the trashcans and then the roof or simply Flap Flip onto the roof.

Banjo Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge[edit]

Jiggies:

  • Inside Jiggywiggy's Temple.
  • In a Shrub near Honey B's Hive.
  • Northeast of Spiral Mere, use the Golden Feathers.
  • Southeast of Spiral Mere. Use Shock Pad.
  • Near the Breegull Beach's entrance, use bill drill.
  • Go northeast of Bad Magic Bayou right where the waterfall starts. There will be a Jiggy in the air. Use feathery flap move.
  • Behind the entrance to Bad Magic Bayou.
  • Find all 5 Jinjos.

Jinjos:

  • On a platform, use the Flap Flip jump to reach.
  • In the water behind the Spiral Mountain.
  • You can find this Jinjo next to the place where you learned the Pack Whack.
  • Surrounded by fire. Use Ice Eggs to put out the fires.
  • Hidden under a ledge of Spiral Mere.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts[edit]

Jiggies:

1-6. Six of the Best:

  • Talk to L.O.G. at the top of Spiral Mountain
  • Complete the six challenges to win the prizes
  1. Stay within the crown for twelve total seconds as it moves
  2. Move Grunty's eye to the dumpster by Banjo's house
  3. Race around the mountain while switching between land, water and air.
  4. Shoot all the giant floating targets
  5. Deliver the three honeycombs from the stumps to the top of the mountain.
  6. Push all the cube-shaped vegetables out of the area.
  • Between all of these challenges L.O.G. will ask you four trivia questions in true Banjo-Kazooie fashion. Each correct answer gives you five extra seconds.
  • All the challenges are included in one overall timer. Earning the Jiggy time gets you six Jiggies. The same goes for Notes and T.T. Trophy.

7. Spiral Mountain Showdown

  • Talk to Grunty outside Banjo's House
  • Destroy all five of Grunty's vehicles using only one vehicle.
  1. This Monster Truck is fast and tough, something homing would be fine enough.
  2. This galleon stays in the lake, she's in one place - a piece of cake!.
  3. Now invisibility is her power, destroy the vehicle and make her cower!
  4. This immobile vehicle can only hop, get underneath to make her stop.
  5. Grunty's up to her old tricks, she flies a jet-powered broomstick. The broom is very quick and strong, making the battle extra long!
  • Defeating Grunty beats the game and sends the witch to L.O.G.'s video game factory, located beneath Spiral Mountain.

Exclusive vehicle parts:

  • Torpedile
  • Large Ammo Storage (Both near the Stumps in a cave where the B-K Cartridge that contained the Pink Egg was in Banjo-Tooie)
