Portrait Chompas are an enemy in Banjo-Kazooie.

Characteristics

Portrait Chompas are a skeletal variant of Grille Chompas encountered only in Mad Monster Mansion, in the Haunted Church and the main mansion. As their name implies, Portrait Chompas hide within the walls behind portraits, such as one which depicts trees under a full moon, one of a castle, one of Gruntilda, and one of Captain Blackeye.

Portrait Chompas act similarly to Grille Chompas and Big Cluckers. When Banjo and Kazooie approach a Portrait Chompa, it bursts out of its portrait, lunging itself at the duo three times, and retreats back into the wall, with the portrait closing itself up. Like their counterparts, Portrait Chompas can be defeated by either a Rat-a-tat Rap or a Wonderwing attack. Unlike Limbos, they do not regenerate after being defeated.

From a distance, Portrait Chompas' portraits cannot be distinguished from normal ones. A Portrait Chompa can only be identified from the distinct growling sound that it makes whenever Banjo goes close to its portrait.
