Not the "Jolly Old Soul" you're used to (or not, seeing as most youth these days have never heard of him), '''Old King Coal''' is essentially a gigantic living pile of coal living inside the boiler of his train, Chuffy. (It is a mystery how his arena fits into the train--it appears larger than the room the train is in. This likely is just something done for gameplay and memory purposes.) He is possessive of his train and thinks a curious Banjo is attempting to steal it. After the Banjo-Tooie traditional exchange of lines, he proceeds to attack Banjo and Kazooie.
He attacks by using his size and the arena to his advantage. The arena is a pool of, presumably, hot coal, with islands of metal sticking around. Though metal heats up fairly well, these islands are strangely the only safe places to go when Old King Coal turns up the heat, making the surrounding coal damaging to the bear. This also makes Banjo have to hold his breath, presumably from the heat. The boss's body causes damage as well.
The method of attack against Old King Coal is simply hit him with as many attacks as you can. Sniping with Kazooie's eggs is a good tactic, staying on the metal islands to stay safe from the heat-ups.
Interesting to note is that, being made of coal, his body parts break off after he's taken a certain amount of hits. First his arm, then the other, then finally it's only his legs (but, oddly, he still speaks).
Upon defeat, Old King Coal lends Banjo and Kazooie usage of his train, as well as a shiny, golden Jiggy. He then allies with the protagonists by assisting in their selection of and travel to unlocked destinations for Chuffy.
