Banjo

Career

Banjo's first event of any significance in his life is when he first met Kazooie. Banjo made his home in Spiral Mountain with Kazooie and his sister Tooty. He was content to live in his small neck of the woods, but the other two bugged him to go on an adventure sometime.

In 1997, just before Banjo was convinced to have an adventure, he got a message delivered by Squawks the Parrot from Diddy Kong, asking for help in driving Wizpig off Timber's Island. Banjo gladly helped, but didn't think that racing really agreed with him.

A year later, Banjo finally caved in and planned an adventure with Kazooie and Tooty. The day they were to go on an adventure, Tooty was kidnapped by Gruntilda for her beauty, leading to a rescue operation. Normally Banjo wouldn't bravely storm into a witch's lair full of bear-smiting traps, but the capture of Tooty and the prodding of Kazooie lead him to go. Using teamwork and a series of moves taught by Bottles, Banjo saved his sister and buried the witch.

However, two months later the witch's minion Klungo transplanted Grunty's spirit into a time-altering suit. Gruntilda proceeded to capture Kazooie and mess up time, preventing the duo from meeting in the first place. But with the help of some Mumbo magic, Banjo was able to give chase, rescue his friend and beat down Grunty a second time.

In the peaceful period that followed, Banjo mostly enjoyed life. However, two years later the witch returned in Banjo-Tooie when she was set free by her sisters and she destroyed Banjo's house, killing Bottles. Banjo sets out with Kazooie once more to stop the witch and her two sisters from zapping the whole island of its life-force to give Gruntilda a new body and hopefully finding a way of reviving Bottles as well as the now undead Jinjo king. Using Bottles' brother Jamjars as a teacher, Banjo learned how to operate with an empty backpack and use Kazooie as a handgun - which was the definitive moment in stopping Grunty for the third time.

With no witch to worry about any more, Banjo started to fix up his house (but gave up halfway through) and live the carefree life. He ate pizza all day and slept all night, leading to him becoming temporarily obese.

After a while, in 2008, Grunty came back again. But this time, she was followed by a mysterious being called L.O.G., who devised a competition to see who will own Spiral Mountain. With his quadruple-chins and obesity magically removed, Banjo was anxious to earn the rights to his home and got to work. After a long test of vehicular combat, he won the challenge and Spiral Mountain's deeds.

Then in 2010, Banjo got word of a racing tournament of some sort. He decided to put his old racing skills to the test, so he and Kazooie fixed up the 'Bolt Bucket' and went out racing with Sonic and friends.

• The only time Banjo is heard speaking clear English was in Diddy Kong Racing. When you select him, he says, "I'm Banjo!"
  • This also reveals that Banjo has a Texan accent.

Bee Banjo

Bee Banjo is a special, unique transformation that appears in both Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie.

Big Al

• Big Al resembles Rambi the Rhinoceros from Donkey Kong Country.

Black Jinjo

The reason the family is so big could be because they are harder to see than other Jinjos, making it harder to rescue all of them.

• Ironically, given how he is treated in the main series, Bottles has the best on-paper vehicle stats in Banjo Pilot.

Broomstick

History (Banjo-Kazooie)

Gruntida's Broomstick only has one simple task; to carry Grunty's considerably heavy weight from place to place.[...]Then we will meet the broom again in the final battle to serve Gruntilda by swooping down to attack Banjo and Kazooie. humorously, when the Broomstick stops, it begins smoking and sputtering, forcing Gruntilda to begin smacking it like a disabled car to restart it (which is the duo's chance to attack).

Caterpillar

• Even though they're called caterpillars, they don't even have legs in Banjo Kazooie compared to real life, this is why they should be called worms.

Captain Blackeye

• If you look at his face closely, you can see it looks rather green. Also, there are a few faint scales on his skin. It is possible he is part human, part fish. However, his green face is probably due to his seasickness and his scales may be a result of bad skin care.

• There are enemies who resemble Cheato in Donkey Kong 64, Books. Both them and Cheato even share the same Japanese name. However, Cheato has green eyes while Books have green eyes.

Chilly Willy

• Chilly Willy's color scheme is very similar that that of Perfect Chaos from Sonic Adventure. Seeing as Sonic Adventure was made before Banjo-Tooie, this may be a reason. Other similarities include a long neck-like structure, blue skin and green eyes. The only difference is that Chilly Willy is attributed with Ice and Perfect Chaos with water.

Chuffy

• Chuffy appears to be a 4-4-0 tank engine or an American type steam locomotive, but has got no tender, and has a bunker like a tank engine and buffers like a European engine. These types of engines (including Chuffy) of this most common wheel arrangement have eight wheels (four leading wheels, four driving wheels, and no trailing wheels) and were used most common on American railroads during the 1800s and 1830s until 1928 and were given the name "American" in 1872 to show all the work they did on every railroad in the United States.
• Usually, steam engines carry tenders, that would have eight wheel trucks to make up for a total of eight wheels, and when others carry tenders, that have four wheels, Chuffy has no tender and has a bunker instead as well as other egnines.

Clanker

He is an extremely large aquatic creature, sort of resembling a giant cyborg shark despite having a whale's blowhole, so his actual species is questionable.[...]Grunty uses him as her Garbage disposal but therefore has him in a worsening condition.

Delphinum

Delphinum is a dolphin in Banjo Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge in Breegull Beach. He needs Banjo to swim under into the Breegull Lagoon and move a jiggy off of the Haunted Hold. Banjo is forced to follow Delphinum and must look out for bubbling seaweed to replenish his bubble supply.

• She makes her way back to Spiral Mountain, even though she is still a skull (probably why it took her eight years to get there). [...] A fat Banjo and bodiless Grunty start to collect the thousands of badges L.O.G. put in front of them, but soon grows impatient of a skull and a fat bear with a fat bird in his backpack running around.

Powers and abilities

She was also shown to have a knack for surviving situations that would have killed an ordinary person, including falling from a great height and being crushed by a boulder (which she not only survived, but she even attempted to lift the rock off her), her flesh being eaten away for two years, and even having virtually her entire body save for her head completely obliterated.

Trivia

• Oddly enough, when fighting Banjo and Kazooie in Banjo-Tooie, she still speaks normally despite the fact that her sisters' death no longer had her obligated to stop speaking in rhyme. She does, however, return to her trademark rhyming dialogue in Nuts and Bolts.
• During one of her taunts throughout her lair in the first game, she says "When I'm nice and slim once more, burgers, fries, and chips galore!". In actuality, under british terms, fries and chips are actually the same thing (Chips being the british equivalent of fries), with potato chips in Britain actually being Potato Crisps, so her line should be "When I'm nice and slim once more, burgers, chips, and crisps galore!", as Rare is a British company.

Jamjars

Like his brother, Jamjars doesn't think too kindly of Banjo's smart-aleck sidekick, Kazooie, but tolerates her enough to teach the pair some of the game's most important moves, possibly because of Kazooie's enthusiasm to beat the living (or in this case, undead) daylight out of Grunty.

Jinjo

These bipedal teddy bear-like critters with beaks come in a variety of colors and are more intelligent than their appearance might let on. It is never explained in detail, but Jinjos seem to have some magical powers, possessing the ability to fly among other things. They also seem to be able to breathe underwater and live in harsh environments, due to the fact that many Jinjos are found underwater or in other dangerous surroundings.

Trivia

• In Witchyworld, a Jinjo is trapped in a cage and is called a "Weird Killer Alien".
• The Grey Jinjos were killed by the Hag 1, despite the fact that Jinjos are notorious for being able to survive almost anything unscathed, like being crushed by rocks, living in scalding hot water or poisonous gas, seeing some of the places their hidden in the games. This may prove they did live, but there is no evidence to back that up.
• 'Jinjo' is most likely a combination of the words 'jiggy' and 'banjo'.

Jinxy

• The pronounce of the name Jinxy is rather similar to the Pokémon Jynx.

Kazooie

She does leave the backpack on occasion, but her friendship (and rent-free apartment) with Banjo always leads her back eventually

L.O.G.

Trivia

• It is possible that Fiddlesworth Dunfiddlin, from Grabbed By The Ghoulies, is actually L.O.G in diguise. When asked about why he has never been met or heard of, he replies "Well, I'm very good at disguising myself. Pet my piglet!". Pet my piglet is one of the many 'fiddlerisms' that Fiddlesworth says in the game.
• L.O.G. bears a strong physical resemblance to the Krazoa God in Star Fox Adventures, particularly his incarnation at Moon Mountain Pass, via the long flowing robe, tall appearance, and to a lesser extent head. As both Nuts and Bolts and Star Fox Adventures were created at least in part by Rare, the similarity may have been deliberate.

Leaky

• This character is one of the most unrecognized minor characters in the game. However, for some players, he is one of the most useful because he allows Banjo and Kazooie to access the cheat room in the Treasure Trove Cove Sandcastle.

Mildred Ice Cube

• Mildred is probably the only friendly character in the series that the player has to directly kill for their own gain (George's demise was due to his own miscalculations).

Mr. Fit

Mr. Fit, as his name implies, is very fit (despite looking rather plump in the belly).

Mrs. Bottles

• It seems strange Mrs. Bottles left her husband due to events that were not Bottles' fault at all. In Banjo-Tooie, there aren't any hints of Mrs. Bottles being traumatized due to the death and resurrection.

Mumbo Jumbo

Career

Mumbo's past is largely a mystery, although he repeatedly states he was the best student at the Handsome Shaman Institute. What is known is that he was a magical instructor of Gruntilda's at some point in time. However, despite Mumbo's teachings, Grunty turned to dark magic and transformed Mumbo's head into a skull.

Mumbo first appears in Banjo-Kazooie as the "best shaman in all game". Found in multiple worlds starting in Mumbo's Mountain, the skull-faced one transformed Banjo and Kazooie into native animals (and a plant) in return for Mumbo Tokens, as Mumbo wanted to help the bear and bird beat Grunty to get his face back. Despite Grunty being buried under a large boulder, Mumbo's face remained intact. Mumbo remained a friend of Banjo, while he and Kazooie got into dust-ups.

In 2000, Mumbo was just about to get all of Banjo's cash in a poker game when Banjo's House started shaking. Being brave, the shaman ran outside to find out what was going on. He found that Grunty had been revived by her two sisters and ran to tell, but Grunty spotted him and destroyed the house and killed Bottles. On the following adventure, Mumbo did some adventuring himself, helping the bear and bird get around by magically altering the environment (such as re-railing a derailed train and making the water in Jolly Roger's Lagoon breathable). However, Mumbo earned a competitor in the transformation business, Humba Wumba. The two hated each other, each convinced that they were better than the other. In the end, Grunty was beaten once more, but Mumbo's skull face still didn't revert.

Relationships

Gruntilda

In Banjo-Kazooie, if the player loses their last life or simply quits the game before saving Tooty and the ending is shown wherein Gruntilda makes herself beautiful by uglifying Banjo's sister, Mumbo—apparently smitten with Grunty's new appearance—will suddenly appear and offer her a flower! This indicates that he has a weakness for a beautiful face—even when he knows full well that it's only skin deep... Mumbo also asks Grunty to come back to Mumbo's skull hut with him.

Trivia

• In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, if you wait long enough, Mumbo will take his eyeballs and juggle them, which of course he has a talent for juggling eyeballs.
• Mumbo is also speculated to be a Grublin, primarily due to the beta version of the Grublins being blue with feathered skull masks similar to Mumbo's skull head. Other similarities in the final product (such as the build, grass skirt, and red feathers on the head) also help support this.
• Mumbo must have a weak spot for beautiful women as seen in Banjo-Kazooie, when he offers a flower to the newly transformed Gruntilda. Also, during the end credits, if you do not have all 100 Jiggies, Mumbo will refuse to show the "secret pictures" and then says that he had to go because he has a "hot date" (referring to the Bikini Girl).

Old King Coal

• Old King Coal may bear a resemblance to The Great Mighty Poo who is one of the bosses from Conker's Bad Fur Day.

Roysten

• Some have speculated that Roysten is indestructible, after surviving being cooked multiple times and being crushed by a boulder for an extended period of time (supposedly a day, despite him being "knocked off the barbecue" two years previously).

Rubbish video game character police

The rubbish video game character police are police that arrest video game characters who have no purpose in a video game. They have so far arrested the tutorial enemies; namely Topper, Bawl, Colliwobble, andQuarrie, according to Rare.

School of Fishes

School of Fishes or simply fishes are minor characters on Banjo-Kazooie series. They are just some fishes found in some lakes, rivers and oceans who are always seen together. They don't have any importance in the game, they just spruce.

In Banjo-Kazooie, there is a school of fishes in Spiral Mountain (in the lake around the mountain) and Mumbo's Mountain (in the lake). Those schools look exactly the same.

In Banjo-Tooie there are several school of fishes in many parts of Jolly Roger's Lagoon, with two different kind of fishes. There are also fossil versions of school of fishes in Terrydactyland. Also, in Diddy Kong Racing there are many fishes swimming in many water parts.

Scrat

• Scrat shares his name with the acorn-loving Scrat, the saber-toothed squirrel from the Ice Age movies.
• Despite being a Styracosaurus and thus herbivorous, Scrat seems to have a taste for meat and has even said to have eaten a caveman. Interestingly, some scientists now think that Triceratops, Styracosaurus, and other ceratopsians might have been omnivorous.

Snacker

The Snacker in Treasure Trove Cove talks constantly about Banjo being his next meal, which itself can be more of an incentive to stay on land than the actual threat of being bitten.

Soggy

Games (Banjo-Tooie)

If Banjo and Kazooie talk to Soggy in Boggy's Igloo, she says she hopes Moggy will get in trouble for jumping on her mother's bed, indicating she is somewhat of a malicious tattletale.

Steamy

Steamy is a lava dragons coming out of the Lava in this level from Banjo-Pilot and 64 Zoo Lane: Pilot.

T-Rex Banjo

He appeared again in Diddy Kong Racing DS, although some believe that the Tiptup in the Nintendo DS version is in fact Tiptup Jr.

Trophy Thomas

He bears a slight resemblance to Timber the Tiger, who first appeared alongside Banjo in Diddy Kong Racing.

• If you look closely enough, you can see his eyes behind his glasses.
• His appearance seems to resemble a parody of Crash Bandicoot.

Trotty

He also says he's feeling a third leg growing, though this could just be a slightly suggestive joke.

• Third leg is a slang word for penis, In contrast to the E-Rating. Trotty is really talking about an extra leg.
• When Kazooie said You could be Spider boy to Trotty this could be a reference to Spider Man.

Washer Banjo

Washer Banjo is one of the more humorous transformations found in Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie.
