Gruntlings are a recurring enemy in the Banjo-Kazooie series.

Characteristics

As their name implies, they are Gruntilda's minions. There are many types of Gruntlings, identified by the color of their cloaks.

Banjo-Kazooie

Gruntlings debuted in Banjo-Kazooie, where they appear as enemies in Gruntilda's Lair. There are only three types, the red, blue and black-cloaked Gruntlings.

Grunty's Revenge

In Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, Gruntlings have a much more major role compared to their previous appearance, acting as Gruntilda's main minions and appearing as enemies in every world, with two more types than previously. Additionally, in the world Bad Magic Bayou, there is a mini-boss called Gruntling Commander who summons one of each type of Gruntling.

According to a Jinjo Oracle, Gruntweeds are the result of combining Gruntlings with Whiplashes.

Banjo-Pilot

In Banjo-Pilot, a red-cloaked Gruntling makes a cameo at the Grand Prix awards ceremony along with other characters, most of them having debuted in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge.

Types

  • Red: The basic and most common type, taking only one attack to be defeated.
  • Blue: Relatively rarer than red-cloaked Gruntlings and take two attacks to be defeated.
  • Black: The most resistant Gruntlings of the original Banjo-Kazooie (although stronger types debuted in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge), taking three attacks to be defeated.
  • Brown: One of two types of Gruntling that debuted in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge and take four attacks to be defeated.
  • Gray: One of two types of Gruntling that debuted in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge and take five attacks to be defeated, being the most resistant Gruntlings.
